General characteristics of BMW X3 (G01 LCI, facelift 2021) 20i (184 HP) MHEV xDrive Steptronic
When it comes to sporty compact crossovers, the Porsche Macan has become the benchmark, and while the BMW X3 can't entirely match up to it's fellow German, it does come close, offering a drive that feels akin to that of the delightful 3 Series. The X3 is fun to drive; it rotates around corners and sticks to the tarmac with surprising tenacity. The chassis and suspension setup in the base model strikes a glorious balance of responsiveness and comfort, and the X3 never feels too stiff over rough road surfaces. We'd recommend getting the dynamic damper control system that forms part of the Dynamic Handling Package for an even better ride. This suspension system adds Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes for an even more supple and intuitive ride. The M40i comes with adaptive M Suspension, which lowers the car by 0.4 inches, and makes it turn in even better, and an M Sport differential is available optionally. The brake feel is good, and you can drive the X3 fast in confidence; the steering feel is on par with the rest of the class.
BMW has managed to build a compact SUV that is both practical and fun to drive, which also provides a composed driving experience that is soft and comfortable when it needs to be but sporty and entertaining when you're up for it. Both engine options are punchy and deliver outstanding performance without costing a fortune at the pumps. The X3 will never be an off-road hero, but BMW didn't intend it for that: it's brilliant in the city and on the long road, and, in our opinion, is one of the best products from the marque. The interior may be a bit conservative for some, especially with Volvo competing for top honors and offering the XC60 with a sumptuous yet understated cabin, but it's comfortable, well-put-together, and pleasant to spend time in. At the end of the day, the X3 ticks so many of the boxes that you can't help but call it an all-rounder; and while options may be expensive, any time spent behind the wheel will make it feel worthwhile.
